Our Homestays: Experience Rural Life For Yourself

Sometimes when we travel to a new place, we want to do more than just visiting popular sights and trying food in the best restaurants in town. We want to get a feel of what life is like for the people living in the place and get to understand their customs, traditions, and culture.

There are plenty of tours Cusco has to offer, but getting off the beaten path and heading out into the hills to experience life there is something else altogether. At Kallpa, we offer you the opportunity to leave the noise and busyness of the city behind to visit rural communities. This is something very few visitors to the country get to witness.

It’s a very humbling experience and will help you to understand the area you’re visiting much better. So, if you don’t like places with big crowds and want to get closer to the locals and their way of life, this is the tour for you.

What and Who Will You See?

In a homestay, Peru, you will get to spend time with families who live in remote zones. You won’t just be observing them, either. We want you to get involved and partake in the same activities that they do. It’s more than just a tour. It’s a way for you to get up close and personal with residents there and spend time with their families; something other operators don’t offer.

This way, you’ll be able to appreciate how they live and understand the challenges they face on a daily basis. They don’t have access to the same amenities we do and most things they eat will be grown or raised by them. In the homestays, you will be provided with a comfortable bed and hot water to relax after busy days.

Apart from meeting some wonderful people, you’ll see some incredible landscapes. A lot of the small villages are set in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which is a truly beautiful place. The views you get from the places you’ll stay will be some of the best you’ve ever seen.

The Incas lived here because of the versatility of the land, and you can see why people still live here. They also understand the Quechua language and Inca symbols a lot more than those who live in the cities.

What Will You Do?

There are a lot of activities to enjoy when out in the countryside. To begin with, you’ll be able to go on plenty of hikes and enjoy your surroundings. As well as the amazing views you’ll get to see alpacas and llamas happily grazing on the grass.

The families will happily share with you their ancestral rituals as well as helping you to learn about their methods in agriculture and raising animals. You’ll get to try for yourself how it works and see how easy or hard it really is.

In addition, you’ll be able to cook alongside the family and learn some of their traditional cooking techniques and dishes. One of the most popular plates and cooked in the Andes for many generations. It is cooked below the piping hot earth and has a very unique taste. Definitely an experience worth trying.

Being located in the Sacred Valley means you’ll also get to see some Incan archaeological sites and enjoy some fantastic stargazing in the evenings. Don’t forget to try to learn a few Quechua words, too!
