The iconic Classic Inca Trail is the most popular trek in South America that takes you through the dramatic Andes Mountains, Cloud Forest with beautiful flora and fauna, archaeological sites, and spectacular landscapes in route to the epic, Machu Picchu. 

As you walk the revered Classic Inca Trail with our knowledgeable guide, he will fill you in on the history, legends, and myths of the Incas, which are still present today in the Quechua communities. Trek for 4 days, camping in the wilderness for 3 nights under the brilliant stars until reaching Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and walking down to the astonishing Machu Picchu for an outstanding tour.

The Inca Trail requires a permit, and the spaces sell out quickly since it is a very poplar trek. Kallpa suggests booking at least 6 months in advance to secure your spot on the trail.

Day 1: Inca Trail 4 Days – Cusco – Km 82 – Wallabamba (L, D)

Inca Trail Machu Picchu Day 1

Your adventure of a lifetime begins today! The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu trek starts very early in the morning from Cusco or the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Depart your hotel with your professional guide in private transport to Km82, Piskacucho to commence our exciting hike of the Inca Trail.  First meet your porters and staff and present your passport and permit at the check point.  The excitement begins, crossing the Vilcanota River (2,720m) bridge walking on a flat terrain.  You will ascend passing the viewpoint observing the spectacular Inca city of Llactapata (2750m/9020ft. We continue a relatively easy, flat terrain for about 6 hours catching splendid views of the snow-capped peak of Mount Veronica and amazing diversity of the wild flora and fauna. Finally, we reach our first campsite at Wallabamba (3,000m), where we will have a well-deserved dinner cooked by our private chef.  Sleep peacefully in the wilderness.

Day 2: Wallabamba – Warmiwañusca or “Dead Woman’s Pass  Pacaymayo (B, L, D)

Inca Trail Machu Picchu

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will start the most challenging day of the classic Inca Trail. We start out with a steep ascent towards the highest mountain pass of our trek, Abra de Warmiwañusca or “Dead Woman’s Pass” (4,215m). As we climb up with short breaks to catch our breath, admire the splendid landscapes, lovely hummingbirds, and other bird species.  You will feel victorious after conquering the highest point of the trail.  After a well-earned rest with drinks and snacks, we will descend a steep downhill to Pacaymayo (3,550m) for approximately 2 hours through a trail of stone stairs. During the descent, it is advisable to use your trekking poles to balance your weight. Arrive at our second campsite at Pacymayo where you will enjoy lunch and have the rest of the afternoon to unwind and relax. In the evening enjoy a delicious dinner and sleep soundly tucked away in your comfortable tent.

DAY 3: Pacaymayo – Runkuracay pass – Wiñayhuayna (B, L, D)

This is the most awe-inspiring day of the Inca Trail so far visiting Inca ruins on the trail!
We start the day with a steep hike towards Runkurakay pass, from where you will appreciate stunning views of the Andes and the high jungle.  Following a short rest, we will descend to the incredibly beautiful Inca site of Sayacmarca and enter the cloud forest with brilliant scenery of colorful orchids, and various bird species.  After, about an hour we will reach the Inca ruins of ‘Phuyupatamarca (Town in the Clouds), where we will catch amazing views of the Salkantay Mountain. Thereafter, we continue downhill for approximately 3 hours until reaching Wiñayhuayna (Forever Young), our last campsite on the Inca Trail.  Settle in and take a walk to the nearby Inca ruins of Wiñayhuayna located on a steep hillside overlooking the Urubamba River. Enjoy dinner and celebrate your last night with your porters and staff.

DAY  4:  Wiñayhuayna – Sun Gate (Inti Punku) – Machu Picchu – Cusco (B)

An early morning rise today to have breakfast and to start our hike, the last stretch of the Classic Inca Trail to arrive early to Sun Gate (Inti Punku) (2730m). It´s an easy walk up to Sun Gate, to appreciate the first sight of the marvelous Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You will have time to snap many pictures before walking downhill to the magnificent Citadel of Machu Picchu.  Take pleasure, walking through the citadel with your professional guide learning its history, legends, and the theories regarding this magical site. Tour the most important sectors of Machu Picchu, including its temples, corridors and more. Relish in its beauty and splendor. Optional extra cost: Hike Huayna Picchu or Montaña. After a fabulous time, exit the park with your guide and take the shuttle bus to Aguas Calientes where you will have lunch on your own.  Following lunch, you will board the train to the Ollantaytambo or Poroy station where our Kallpa Representative will meet you and take you back to your hotel in Cusco.
